Field Notes

This is not an exhibition. It is tectonics. House in Combustion emerges as a field of forces installed inside a house and inside a body. What is activated here is a continuous process of displacement, friction, and pressure — like magma beneath the Earth’s crust, like what precedes visibility. The house operates as a sensitive tectonic plate: it absorbs, deforms, fractures, sustains, and transmits energy. The work is not organised to be seen, but to take place.

The Proposition

Tectonics of the Body-Earth

Tectonics here exceeds its geological meaning and expands as both method and metaphor. It is tectonics of the body-Earth, celestial body, social body, national body — where historical, affective, political, and material layers are compressed into slow combustion. Paintings, objects, residues, gestures, and spatial decisions do not illustrate concepts; they are physical consequences of prolonged pressure.

An Active Tectonic Field

The artist does not act as a curator of forms, but as an operator of tensions, inhabiting the process while it is still hot, unstable, and unfinished. Records, layers, fissures, and displacements testify to a practice lived from within. What is offered here is not a result, but a location.

In Combustion — Not On Fire

House in Combustion carries a processual charge. It suggests duration, internal heat, something ongoing and unstable. It is slower, more dangerous, more accurate — a structure burning from within, often invisibly. Less event, more condition.

The Artist

Rodrigo Garcia Dutra

Born in Rio de Janeiro, 1981. MFA from Central Saint Martins and MA in Sculpture from the Royal College of Art, London. Dutra’s practice investigates what he terms sensitive geometry — the formal and affective residues that bodies, structures, and cosmologies leave upon one another over time.

Exhibited at White Cube, South London Gallery, Instituto Tomie Ohtake, and Bikaner House New Delhi. Works in permanent collections including MASP, MAR, the National Museum of the Republic (Brasília), and the British Government Art Collection. Three-time nominee, PIPA Prize (2015–2017).
